Community-based Conservation work

A lot of my previous work has centred around community-based conservation. Here you can read more about this work, please head to the 'Contact Me' page if you would like to discuss my work, or how I can help you.

Community urban green spaces - for people and wildlife

Wrote and secured a large grant from National Heritage Lottery Local Places for Nature Grant (funded by the Welsh Government) to develop a strategy for a community-led habitat creation/restoration pilot project.

The Sustainable Mumbles Urban Green Spaces Project (SMUGS) is a community-led project that I worked to establish funds and a strategy for with my local authority, with the aim to implement small-scale nature-based solutions within a coastal community and enhance a green space for people and wildlife. My role was to develop the strategy and project by planning action e.g., remove INNS from a neglected green space with good links to woodlands and grasslands, establish refugee groups and others for a community growing section, establish connections to implement NbS e.g., green roofing on sheds, water butts, pond, bog gardens, SUDs and solar powered electricity to benefit wildlife and people. The aim for this project was to establish a LNR and worked alongside local authorities, school groups, The Wildlife Trust and others.

Community-led orchard restoration with The Orchard Project

As part of an orchard restoration project with Mumbles Community Council, I established a core volunteer group, undertook and co-led traditional orchard management training courses with the volunteer group and practical management at the orchard e.g., planting new trees, coppicing, wildflower management, hedge cutting and pruning.

Plastic Free Community & community recycling schemes

Set up the largest Plastic Free Community in the local area (named Plastic Free Mumbles), in collaboration with Surfers Against Sewage. As part of the campaign I created a volunteer group, held educational events/workshops and beach cleans, passed a notion with the local authority to commit to plastic free changes within the workplace, worked with businesses to help reduce plastic waste and produced a campaign to help reduce the single-use coffee cup waste within the coastal community.

Please see here to read the Surfers Against Sewage article, of which they chose Plastic Free Mumbles as their top Plastic Free Community in the UK.

Mumbles #InTheLoop
Established a collaborative system-change three year campaign, to introduce recycling infrastructure and improve on-the-go recycling into the Mumbles area. This campaign collaborated with the local authorities and the environmental charity Hubbub to undertake pre-and-post community surveys on recycling-on-the-go and install recycling infrastructure into the community, equipped with behaviour change signage and messaging.

Please see here to watch my talk on this camapign and Plastic Free Mumbles as a whole. In this talk I discuss the movements principles, aims, objectives and the WHY, delving into social science and behaviour change models for conservation and pro-environmental behaviours and values.

Mumbles WILD verges project

In collaboration with Plantlife, I proposed and directed a campaign with MCC called the Mumbles WILD verge project. This three-year plan saw the implementation of new native wildflower verges within the community, some verges spanning over 40 square metres, incorporated a sustainable mowing approach which was adopted by the local council and removed any use of pesticides on all chosen verge locations.
